Dotwall
Dotwall turns any photo into a giant poster printed on ordinary sheets of paper. Need a hand? Email hola@jmkr.es and we'll get back to you.
Making a poster
- Image: drop a photo on the window, open one, or paste it (⇧⌘V). JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and TIFF work.
- Frame: choose the paper and how many sheets across and down. Drag the photo to move it, pinch or ⌘-scroll to zoom, and use Straighten to level it.
- Proofs: Dotwall prints your photo with every screen — halftone dots, dithering and mosaic — each tuned to keep as much of it as possible. Click one to use it, or More like this for variations.
- Tune: adjust the screen, the tones and the ink and paper colours.
- Output: set margins and overlap, then export the PDF or print.
Printing and assembling
- Always print at 100% scale. Turn off "Scale to fit" or "Fit to page" in the print dialog. File › Print Calibration Sheet (free) prints a 10 cm square to check.
- The first page is an assembly map. Each sheet is labelled (A1, A2, B1…) with a mini map in its corner.
- Trim the top and left margins of every sheet except row A and column 1, then start at A1 and glue each sheet over the shaded strips of its neighbours.
- A smudged sheet? Select it on the Output step and use Print Selected Sheets.
Activating the direct download or the web version
In the version downloaded from jmkr.es and in the web version at dotwall.jmkr.es, exporting and printing unlock with a license. Buy one from the unlock sheet, paste the key from your receipt email and click Activate. It needs the internet once; after that the Mac app works offline. One license works on up to three devices in total — Macs or browsers — and includes 1 year of free updates.
The web version
- It works in recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers and tablets. Pictures never leave your device.
- Your last poster is kept in the browser, so a reload brings it back. Save project downloads a
.dotwallfile that the Mac app opens too. - Print… opens the PDF in a new tab: choose Actual size (100%) in the print dialog.
- HEIC photos open in Safari; in other browsers, export them as JPEG first.
Lost your key? Lemon Squeezy emailed it to you at purchase; you can also find it, and free up activated Macs, in the Lemon Squeezy customer portal (in the web version, Deactivate this browser frees its slot). The Mac App Store version unlocks with an in-app purchase instead; use Restore Purchase on a new Mac.
Common questions
- How big can a poster be? Up to 30 × 30 sheets. The Frame step warns you when the photo has too few pixels for the screen you chose.
- Why are the dots not round in the thumbnail? Small previews blend the dots; the close-up on each proof and the real-size preview show them as they print.
- Refunds? Mac App Store purchases follow Apple's standard process (reportaproblem.apple.com). For direct purchases, email us and we'll sort it out.
- Open-source software: see the licenses page.
